The law itself can do nothing for a client; it's the attorney's understanding of the law that makes justice happen. Bill not only understands the law, but knows how to work within the system to promote positive change. He has practiced law for more than 35 years while remaining highly active in the professional community, serving on many boards, writing, and teaching. He has lectured on trial advocacy in 35 states and four countries, and testified as an expert witness in legal malpractice cases in Texas and Wyoming.

Bill and his wife, JoAnn, enjoy living on the Oregon Coast and spending time at their Portland condominium. He rides a custom-built chopper, and waxes philosophy at the drop of a hat.  JoAnn Barton served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lincoln County Children's Advocacy Center and currently serves in the elected position of Commissioner for the Port of Newport.

Bill is also the proud father of three adult children.  His daughter Monique is the Director of Philanthropy for Regence Health in the six Northwestern States.  Bill's youngest daughter, Almine, is a licensed acupuncturist and certified fitness trainer in Bend, Oregon.  Son Brent is an attorney at Perkins Coie in Portland, Oregon and serves as the elected State Representative for District 51 in Estacada and Clackamas County.

Bill claims to be the source of some amusement for his children and after spending a few minutes in his company, you'll find this easy to believe. His expansive personality and endless intelligence come together to create a highly effective and accomplished lawyer.
